SpeedStay ("we," "our," or "us") operates the SpeedStay mobile application and website at speedstay.app (collectively, the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect your information when you use our Service. By using SpeedStay, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.

2. Information We Collect

We collect the following types of information:

  • Email address — collected when you create an account, used to authenticate you and send account-related communications.
  • Display name — a username or name you choose to identify yourself within the app.
  • Location / GPS data — used to identify nearby hotels and associate speed tests with a property. We do not continuously track your location.
  • Speed test results — download speed, upload speed, ping latency, WiFi score, and the hotel property where the test was conducted. This data forms the core of our crowdsourced database and may be made publicly visible.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide, operate, and improve the SpeedStay Service
  • Associate speed test results with hotel properties and display them to other users
  • Maintain leaderboards, points, and contest eligibility
  • Send you account-related emails (e.g., password reset, contest notifications)
  • Analyze usage patterns to improve the app experience
  • Comply with legal obligations

4. Sharing of Information

We reserve the right to share your information in the following circumstances:

  • Service providers — We share data with third-party vendors who help us operate the Service, including Supabase (database), Vercel (web hosting), Railway (API hosting), and analytics providers. These parties are contractually obligated to keep your data confidential.
  • Affiliate partners — We work with booking partners including Booking.com, Expedia, and Hotels.com. Clicking affiliate links may share session data with these partners subject to their own privacy policies.
  • Aggregated or anonymized data — We may share aggregated, de-identified data about WiFi performance trends with partners, researchers, or the public. This data cannot reasonably be used to identify you.
  • Business transfers — If SpeedStay is acquired or merges with another company, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction.
  • Legal requirements — We may disclose your information if required by law or in response to valid legal process.

We do not sell your personal information to third parties for their own marketing purposes.

5. Public Data

Speed test results you submit — including WiFi scores, speeds, and the associated hotel — are contributed to a public, crowdsourced database and will be visible to other users of the Service. Your display name may be shown alongside your submissions on leaderboards and hotel detail pages. Do not submit speed tests if you do not wish this data to be public.

6. Data Retention

We retain your account information and speed test history for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. You may request deletion of your account and associated data by contacting us at privacy@speedstay.app.

7. Security

We use industry-standard measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) and access controls on our database. However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

8. Children's Privacy

SpeedStay is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

9. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal information. To exercise these rights, contact us at privacy@speedstay.app. California residents may have additional rights under the CCPA.

10. Third-Party Links

The Service contains links to third-party websites and booking platforms. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites. We encourage you to review their privacy policies before providing any information.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
